A dedicated two-week laboratory campaign has recently been carried out as part of the OneBAT project, focusing on large-scale serological analysis of bat samples.

Maria Francesca Priore (Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie) and Simon Scott (University of Kent) worked intensively to process and analyse over 1,000 bat serum samples. Conducted over two full weeks, including weekends, the activity resulted in the successful processing of nearly 100% of the collected sera.

These serology assays are essential to detect past exposure to viruses in bat populations, contributing to a better understanding of viral circulation and potential spillover risks.

This intensive effort represents a significant step forward in OneBAT’s mission to strengthen surveillance and improve preparedness against emerging viral threats through a coordinated One Health approach.
